I walked Te Araroa – the 3,000km trail that runs the length of New Zealand – between September 2019 and March 2020, and documented it all here on this blog. Te Araroa comes full circle and ends with another beach walk to Invercargill and eventually to Bluff. A 22km, mostly unsealed, no-exit road from Te Araroa takes you to the most Easterly point on mainland New Zealand. Renting a car or taking advantage of the Intercity bus system before or after a thru-tramp to explore the rest of the country can take your journey to even more places in this fantastic land. Once you reach Beacon Point, the trail meanders along the Lake Wanaka shore to Bremner Bay and into the beautiful town of Wanaka CBD. The Te Araroa is one of the world’s newest long-distance hiking trails, opening on December 3rd, 2011 and takes on average a whopping four to six months to walk in its entirety. Many people choose to hop on a water taxi or shuttle to get there. Follow the stopbank on the left side of the Mangatāwhiri River. Follow uphill, crossing over a fence into a scrub, before arriving next to the Maungaparerua Stream. On average, it is recommended the trail can be completed in 120 days—though feel free to trek at your own pace. Great care is required to cross the saddle. Beach towns like Greymouth (Māwhera) offer more beach day opportunities, and further south, Fox Glacier and Franz Josef provide access from the West side to some of the most incredible tramping routes in the Southern Alps. This section is less well-marked and you’ll want to carry your GPS and compass at all times. Set out onto the Fisher Track, heading westward towards Kurua Road. While technically in the Wellington section of the trail now, the Tararua Ranges is a continuation from the previous section with another long 3-6 days of trekking, though divided into three stages of 1-2 days of hiking each. Trek through pretty tussock country until you reach the exit for Arrowtown. Remaining open and allowing your TA tramp to be what it will be will indeed give you the most authentic, pleasant experience. Here are a few additional side trips one can take when tramping TA. Most hikers choose to do the Te Araroa Trail from north to south, starting in November and working their way towards the end point in the Bluff, usually around the end of April.
